What to Pack for Seoul: A Seasonal Weather & Outfit Guide

Seoul experiences four distinct seasons, and the weather can be more extreme than many international travelers expect. To help you pack efficiently, here is a direct look at Seoul's seasonal weather and the exact clothing you will need month by month.
1. Spring (March to May)
Spring is beautiful but highly unpredictable, with dramatic temperature drops between day and night.
Weather: Mild and pleasant afternoons, but chilly mornings and evenings. March still feels like late winter, while May starts to feel like early summer.
What to Pack: Layering is key. Pack light jackets, trench coats, cardigans, and denim jackets that you can easily take off during the day. Long-sleeve shirts and light scarves are highly useful for late March and April.
2. Summer (June to August)
Summer in Seoul is notoriously hot, intensely humid, and features heavy rainy spells.
Weather: High temperatures often exceed 30°C (86°F). The monsoon season (Jangma) typically hits from late June through July, bringing sudden, torrential downpours.
What to Pack: Lightweight, breathable fabrics like linen, cotton, and moisture-wicking materials. Shorts, t-shirts, and light dresses are standard. Crucially, pack a compact travel umbrella, waterproof shoes or sandals, and a quick-dry light jacket, as indoor venues run air conditioning at very high levels.
3. Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is widely considered the most comfortable time to visit Seoul, featuring clear blue skies and crisp air.
Weather: Clear, sunny days with dropping temperatures as winter approaches. October offers peak autumn foliage, while November gets progressively colder.
What to Pack: Early September still requires summer clothing, but for October and November, transition to sweaters, light wool coats, blazers, and leather jackets. You will want sturdier layers as the November wind picks up.
4. Winter (December to February)
Winter in Seoul is freezing, dry, and accompanied by biting, icy winds that make it feel much colder than the actual temperature.
Weather: Temperatures frequently drop well below freezing, sometimes reaching -10°C (14°F) or lower.
What to Pack: A heavy down coat (long padding) or a high-quality thick wool coat is absolutely necessary. Pack thermal base layers (like Heattech), sweaters, thick socks, gloves, a beanie, and a warm scarf to protect your neck from the wind. Solid walking boots with good grip are recommended for icy streets.
