If someone asks where that man has gone,

Tell him I have walked into the river of time;

Tell him I have entered the water, for the sands of life grew too heavy.

If someone asks again, once more, where that man has gone,

Tell him I have bent low and drifted into the shadows of the tea fields.

Tell him I have hidden in the forest breeze, for the noises of life grew too loud.

And yet, if someone returns once more to ask deeply where that man has gone,

Seat him and pour a cup of green tea.

And tell him:

“He’s in there, in that cup."

Tell him: “Right in there,

Seeped into the green tea."

누가 그자 어디 갔느냐 묻거든

시간의 강물에 걸어 들어갔다 말하라

삶의 모래알이 무거워 물에 들어갔다고.

누가 다시 그자 어디 갔냐고 또 따져 묻거든

차밭 깊이 검게 숙여 들어갔다고 말하라

삶의 소음이 시끄러워 숲의 바람에 숨어 들었다고.

그래도 또 누가 다시 돌아와 그자 어디 갔느냐 새겨 묻거든

그 손을 앉혀 두고 녹차 한 잔 따라 주어라.

그리고 말하라.

나 거기 찻잔 안에 있다고.

나 거기 있다고,

녹차 안에 스며 누웠다고 말하라.
